Memorial Day Safety Tips

Memorial Day Weekend has become the official kick off to summer that most American’s anxiously await after months of wintery and rainy weather. It also happens to be one of the most dangerous holidays for road and highway accidents that law enforcement and first responders have come to know. Keep these helpful driving tips in mind as you prepare for your holiday weekend!

  1. Extra Time. Give yourself extra travel time. Do not speed. Do not try to “make a light” before it turns red. Memorial Day has a 27% higher average of drivers running red lights than any other holiday weekend. Expect that it will take longer than usual to reach your intended destination.
  2. Use Your Seatbelt. If you are driving or in the front seat of a vehicle, regardless of age, you must be properly restrained by a safety belt under Virginia law. In addition, it also requires everyone under the age of 18 to be properly restrained no matter where you are sitting in the car. It is the driver’s responsibility for making sure this happens. Seatbelts save lives.
  3. Know Times of High Risk. Friday afternoons have proven to be the most dangerous time period of Memorial Day Weekend. Individuals are getting off of work excited for the holiday, but can be worn out from the week. There is a higher volume of traffic with people leaving from work to their vacation destinations. Be aware of other drivers on the roadway and anticipate what they might do.
  4. Car Maintenance. Make sure your view is clear and your wipers are in good shape. A sudden storm can drastically affect visibility, especially if there is a coat of pollen or grime on the windshield. If a road trip is in store for you, check your tire pressure. Traveling on a hot surface can take its toll on tires.
  5. Stretch Breaks. Moving your legs and walking around every couple of hours will help you stay awake and alert on the roadways.
