RV Accidents- What to Do

Summer is coming to an end, school is about to start, and everyone is pushing for one last road trip!

For many, that means hitting the road in a recreational vehicle (RV)- this includes campers, trucks, motor homes and toy haulers. Unfortunately, these vehicles can cause devastating injuries. Sheer size reduces the driver’s maneuverability and visibility, especially if the driver is inexperience in operating over-sized vehicles. Here are some tips to have fun and be responsible at the same time!

RV Crash Avoidance Tips

  • Space – Remember, large vehicles require more time and distance to stop. One of the most common errors by drivers is misjudging braking time and distance.
  • Visibility – Due to the size of an RV, the driver has reduced visibility. It is important to take into account your blind spots and not rely on your mirrors alone. Always look before changing lanes or exiting a highway.
  • Experience – Even though some motor homes are as large as commercial trucks, no special license is required to operate them. Inexperienced RV drivers should consider taking RV training which is offered by several driving schools. Extra training will help drivers adjust to the unique driving conditions in operating an RV.
  • Distractions – Distracted driving, in general, can have disastrous consequences. As an RV driver, keep your distractions to a minimum, especially if you are driving a vehicle that is new to you. Stay off  your phone while driving and if you are sleepy- pull over and take a nap.  There’s a bed in the back.

After an RV Crash

If you are involved in an RV crash, you should follow the same procedures as with any automobile accident.

  • Any injured person should seek medical care immediately. Note that symptoms of whiplash, concussion, and other injuries may not appear immediately.
  • Report any accident to local authorities, even if the other driver gives you their insurance and contact information. An accident report contains important information you will need for any insurance claim or if you need to take further legal action. Statute of limitations vary state by state, so it is imperative that you contact an attorney as soon as possible to protect your interests.
  • Do not admit fault as there may be other factors that contributed to the accident that you may not be aware. Be truthful with the authorities with the chain of events that led up to the accident.
  • Take photos of the damaged vehicles before they are moved. The positions of the vehicles may help determine the cause of the accident. Take photos of any injuries sustained in the accident, as well.
