Students Are Back from Winter Break- School Bus Safety Reminders

Students have been out of school for the last few weeks due to weather and winter break—now they are back!  That means happy parents and hopefully happy students.  However, that also means an increase in traffic and school buses back on the road. We would like to take this time to remind you about some school bus safety tips to keep EVERYONE safe!

School Bus Stopped with Flashing Lights? STOP!

  • You must stop for school buses with flashing lights and an extended stop sign when approaching a bus from any direction.
  • You must remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus starts moving again.
  • You must stop whenever the bus is loading and unloading passengers, even if the lights and stop sign are not activated.
  • The only time you are NOT required to stop is if the school bus is on the opposite side of a median or barrier; however, you should be looking out for students exiting the bus and crossing the street.

Other Safety Tips

  • Be mindful of pulling out from a driveway or parking space- there may be students walking or biking to school or bus stops.
  • Watch out while driving in neighborhoods, in school zones, and maintain the posted speed limit, which is usually 25 mph.
  • If there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood, keep an eye out for students walking or biking.
  • Even though we tell our children to be mindful of traffic and their surroundings, we know things can change in the blink of an eye.

At ReidGoodwin we encourage everyone to practice road safety to keep you and your family safe. We hope that you never encounter a careless driver; however, if you or anyone you know has been injured by an unsafe driver, please contact our office to see how we can assist.
