Tractor Trailer Accident on I-95 Leads To Delays

NBC12 News reports that a tractor trailer accident on southbound I-95 at mile marker 77.8 near Lombardy in the City of Richmond is poised to cause substantial traffic delays as crews work to clear roadways.

Data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that more than 100,000 people were injured in traffic accidents involving commercial trucks in the United States in 2012. Of this number, nearly 4,000 people were killed. In total, approximately 333,000 accidents occurred on U.S. roads that involved a large truck.

While the cause of the accident in this case has yet to be determined, a study by the Federal Motor Carrier Administration revealed the following leading factors shown to be causes of truck accidents in the U.S. including:

  1. Illegal drug use
  2. Speeding
  3. Over-the-counter medication use
  4. Driver fatigue
  5. Distracted driving
